Antique Archibald Young Edinburgh Steel Hinged Tongue Depressor Medical Instrument, 19th Century
This is a unique folding medical exam tool from the 19th Century, made of steel (probably nickel plated) by Archibald Young, Surgical Instrument maker from Edinburgh. The two rounded tip blades of the tongue depressor are hinged to unfold up to 90 degrees, one blade to be used as a handle and the other to be placed on and depress the tongue to better examine the oral cavity and throat. The blades are ergonomically shaped, and are of slightly different lengths, 3 5/8 and 3 3/8 inches. There is an angled portion of the longer blade above the hinge to stabilize the hinge during the exam. "Young" and "Edinburgh" and impressed into the back of the shorter blade. The number 17 is impressed on the interior of both blades near the hinge. Very nice old item. Archibald Young was a surgical tool maker in Edinburgh starting in 1777.
